For as long as I can remember my mom has made sure we always ate black eyed peas on New Year's Day. I wouldn't necessarily call myself a superstitious person, but this is one ritual I've always enjoyed. For me it was more of a time to get together and have an easy start to the coming 12 months. Over the years as we grew up, moved out and started families of our own, my sister and I would make it a point to stop back by my parents house on New Year's Day for a quick spoonful of black eyed peas.
As a little girl I hated the taste, I would beg and plead for just one small bite. Yet as I've grown the taste has too. The past few years I tried something new, taking inspiration from one of my favorite restaurants in Austin - Jacoby's. I repurposed their cowboy caviar into one of my own. It was perfect with chips and other dips to be served while watching New Year's Day football. Even my husband (who is still a one spooner) enjoyed his bite of luck going into 2026.
May each of your years be filled with love, light and a little bit of whimsy in the smallest of moments. Happy New Year to you all!
