Valentine's is a day of love. One of so many meanings. I feel over the past few years we have taken a holiday rooted in gift giving and significant others and pushed its walls out in every direction. Turned what was once a no entry zone for anyone single and opened doors to friend gatherings and solo outings.
Someone once told me in Spain the tradition of Valentine's is to give your friends a single rose and a book that reminds you of them. It's a moment to cherish those friendships that bring you through life and carry you in times that love feels lost.
I love the tradition of Galentine's just as much as that of sharing the day with your significant other. And even more so, I love it as a reminder to care for yourself. I have spent many Valentine's Days without someone to share it with, and those have truly been some of my most loving times.
That might sound un realistic and even condescending, but I truly mean it. One year I poured myself a large glass of wine, ordered nachos from my favorite Tex-Mex spot, drew a steaming bath, and read books for hours. I was intentional with showing myself that love doesn't need to come from someone else. And honestly, it was a reminder I really needed at the time.
So may it be a candle lit dinner with the love of your life, your chosen group of best girlfriends, or your one and only (you), I hope you take this Valentine's Day to spread love in every direction, and let it be a day painted in pink and red.
